How ‘Transform Your Resources’ Transformed My Life
In the fall of 2018, I enrolled in Kayse Morris’ Transform Your Resources course. I expected to enhance my resources and my Teachers Pay Teachers skills, but I never expected to transform my life as well. I knew I would gain more sales on TPT as a result of taking the course, but I gained so much more in the process. I started the course as a teacher, and became a teacherpreneur.
Gaining a New Purpose & Direction
In 2008 I started a wiki because I wanted to share information and help other student teachers. In 2012 I started a blog because I wanted to share ideas and help other teachers. In 2013 I opened my Teachers Pay Teachers store because I wanted to share resources and help other teachers. In 2017 I started my YouTube channel because I wanted to share my experiences and help other teachers.
In 2018 I had my first child, and I started to question everything that I was doing. I was helping other teachers, but to what end? My time was no longer my own, and I felt that I needed a really good reason to spend so much of it creating content for other people when I had a baby. The time that I spent helping others started to feel like a sacrifice. For the first time, I asked myself, but what’s in it for me? This is not to say that I did not enjoy helping others, but that in doing so, I had no sense of direction, and no sense of purpose. Luckily, on the very same day that I came to this conclusion (I kid you not), Kayse announced that she had a free workbook to help teachers get started selling their resources.
Through the course I learned about focusing on my efforts on the person whose life I want to impact. By getting specific, and thinking about what problems of theirs I can solve, I have a purpose in what I share. This has been a monumental shift for me in creating content, and in choosing what I work on. Now, everything that I do has a definite purpose, and I no longer feel that I am just spinning my wheels.
Gaining a New Mindset
Transform Your Resources was the largest investment I’ve made in myself since earning my degrees. This was a crucial step for me because making this investment turned my hobby into a business. I was basically selling on TPT for fun. My mindset was, “if I can make resources for my students that can also help other teachers and students, and then be compensated for my time in making the resources, then why not?” Developing a business mindset has been an absolute game changer in becoming a teacherpreneur.
Purchasing the course was my first actual business investment, and my first step to becoming a teacherpreneur. (Not including all those font purchases. Those were just for fun, and I didn’t know they were investments at the time.) I now had a business. Initially, I was scared that turning my hobby into a business would take the fun out of creating resources. Fortunately, I am having even more fun than I did before. Now, I have a challenge before me with problems to solve and goals to accomplish, and the only person I am accountable to is myself. I have been empowered.
Gaining a New Passion
For the past few years I would randomly lament to my husband that I missed being a student. I missed taking classes, and I missed having something new to learn. I even missed having homework. In a way, I’ve felt like something was missing for awhile, but I never knew what.
Transform Your Resources filled that void for me. I was excited about the outcome of course, but even more than that, I was excited about the prospect of learning something new, and taking notes, and having something to work toward.
Taking the course lit a fire in me that I never expected. I cannot stop. Any chance I get, I listen to business podcasts . I am constantly taking notes, applying new strategies, and setting goals. I stumbled upon other courses to take, and devoured their content as well.
Gaining a Community of Like-Minded Individuals
One unexpected benefit of the Transform Your Resources course has been interacting with other students in the facebook group. To be completely honest, I was not pleased about having to join a facebook group. I had just finally changed my phone usage habits, and the last thing I wanted was a reason to be on my phone. However, being a part of this group is one of the best perks of the course. The group continues to thrive even after the modules have finished being released.
The group is a constant source of inspiration as everyone shares their successes and new things they’ve learned. Prior to this group, I never connected with any other TPT sellers. The experiences, knowledge, and expertise of other TPT sellers have been invaluable as I grow my business. Any question I have from how to run an Instagram giveaway to how I should respond to confusing feedback is answered within this group. I also have the opportunity to help others by answering their questions. This has given me so much confidence as I realize that I know more about entrepreneurship than I thought.
Who you surround yourself with, you become. I have become a businesswoman, a go-getter, a transformer, and a teacherpreneur. I am so grateful to be part of this amazing group of (mostly) women.
Gaining a New Vision
In many ways, I feel like I am a different person after becoming a teacherpreneur than I was last fall. I came into the course to transform my resources, but I transformed my life instead. My eyes are open to a world full of possibilities. Now, I have a vision for my life that involves impacting others beyond the four walls of my classroom. This experience has allowed to me set an example as a life-long learner, a go-getter, and dream chaser for my students and my son. I am a proud and confident business woman and entrepreneur, but I still get to be a teacher. I get to be a teacherpreneur, and I am so excited to see where this journey takes me next. This is just the beginning, and the best is yet to come.
